HOUSING ASSOCIATIONS: WHY HAS THE HALO SLIPPED?

In the late 1960s the status of housing associations was high but their standing has gradually slipped. This post highlights several reasons for this slide:

  • Private Finance, market rents and low- cost homeownership promotion;
  • The ‘business mind’;
  • ‘Affordable’ rents;
  • The Right to Buy;
  • Stigmatisation and ‘Poor doors’.

It concludes by suggesting ways that the reputation of housing associations can be restored.
